FACULTY WORK/LIFE BALANCE
In Faculty Career Paths: Multiple Routes to Academic Success and Satisfaction, Bataille and co-author Betsy Brown concluded that all faculty want satisfying careers that enable them to balance their personal and professional lives. How institutions can achieve that balance is more difficult during times of financial constraints, but strategies such as dual career hires, job sharing, part-time tenure, stopping the tenure clock and partner benefits are all ways to respond to faculty needs. The increasing reliance on adjunct or contingent faculty complicates the work of department chairs and challenges colleges and universities to develop equitable policies to address the needs of all faculty.
